  • Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre, Ahmedabad, established by the Government of Gujarat with limited autonomy within the administration of Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad.
1982
  • Transplantation Immunology Laboratory established in collaboration with Transplantation Immunology Laboratory of University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada.

1983

  • International Conference on Kidney Diseases and Hypertension hosted by the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre, Ahmedabad.
  • Approved by National Board of Examinations, Delhi as superspeciality training centre in Nephrology.
  • Research Association was established.

1984

  • Departments of Urosurgery, Renal Transplantation, Anaesthesia and Obstetrics & Gynecology were established.
1985

  • Indian Journal of Nephrology and Bulletin of the institute started by Research and Publication Department of the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre with Dr. H. L. Trivedi as its founding Chief Editor.
  • Recognised by the Gujarat University as superspeciality centre in D.M. Nephrology.              

1986

  • Autonomy was granted by the government of Gujarat and Institute was registered as a trust and society under Society Registration Act.
  • Recognised as Institute of National Importance by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India
  • Indian Society of Organ Transplantation was established with Dr. H. L. Trivedi as Founding Secretary

1987

  • First successful NHB cadaver renal transplantation performed.

1988

  • Foundation stone of new premises laid down by His Excellency, the Governor of Gujarat, Shri R. K. Trivedi.
  • The Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre hosted the first annual Conference of Indian Society of Organ Transplantation.

1989

  • Blood Bank and Drug Bank inaugurated by His Excellency, the Governor of Gujarat, Shri R. K. Trivedi
  • Construction of new premises started.

1990

  • Approved by National Board of Examinations as superspeciality training centre in Urology.
  • IKDRC Staff Co-operative Credit & Supply Society’’ established
  • S. M. Patel elected as Secretary, ISOT.

1992

  • The construction of new premises completed.
  • Institute shifted to its new premises. Sushruta Study Centre established. Dr. V. R. Shah elected as a Secretary, ISOT.

1993

  • Departments of Pediatric Urology and Critical Care established.
  • Ambulance services established

1994

  • GMDC Lithotripsy Centre established.
  • ‘‘Poor Patients’ Relief Fund’’ started.

1995    Dr. H. L. Trivedi elected as President, ISOT.

1996    First International Congress on Transplantation & Kidney Diseases held.

1997   

  • Institute of Transplantation Sciences established.
  • First Brain-dead heart beating cadaver renal transplantation performed.

1998   Second International Congress on Transplantation & Kidney Diseases held.
            Maharshi Sushruta Award for research in transplantation biology established.

2000    Third International Congress on Transplantation & Kidney Diseases held.
            Construction of the Institute of Transplantation Sciences started.

2002   

  • “Transplantation Update 2002” - Conference on Organ and Cell Transplantation held in December 2002 and Nobel Laureate (1996, Medicine and Physiology), Prof. R. M. Zinkernagel visited the Institute on this occasion.
  • Ambulance services further developed
  • Approved by Indian College of Pathologists as the First Superspeciality Training Centre for Renal and Transplant Pathology of India. Construction of the Institute of Transplantation Sciences completed.
  • ‘‘Transplantation India’’ Journal started by the Research and Publication Department.

2003   

  • Dr. H. L. Trivedi and Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre felicitated with ‘‘Swami Vivekananda Sadbhav Sewa’’ Award.
  • Institute of Transplantation Sciences inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Narendra Modi on 11th April, 2003.

2004    “Prope Tolerance” revised protocol was implemented successfully.

2005  

  • The first dual organ and dual cell transplant of the world, which consisted of pancreas, kidney and bone marrow and splenic cells was performed by our team from cadaver donor in to a patient with diabetic nephropathy with CRF on night of 14th February and morning of 15th February, 2005.
  • IV International Congress on Kidney Diseases on November 11-13, 2005
  •  “Sandipani Rushi Gnyaanpeeth Sanman” established and given away on 11th November, 2005
  • Maharshi Sushruta Gnyaanpeeth Sanman” given away on 11th November, 2005
  • Transplantation Research Biology Awards and Awards for Cadaver Transplantation given away-  11th November, 2005.
  • “Stem Cell Research Centre” inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Narendra Modi on 11th November, 2005.
  • The first donor- specific human embryonic stem cell derived hematopoietic stem cell transplantation performed in a renal transplant patient successfully without using any immunosuppression in an African patient with his sister as a donor on 19th December, 2005

  • The first donor- specific human embryonic stem cell derived hematopoietic stem cell transplantation performed in autoimmune disorders and Regenerative Medicine

  • “Human adipose tissue derived mesenchymal stem cells” generated in the lab and used in clinic for the first time in history of transplantation biology of the world- 14th February, 2007.

  • 1st batch of Dialysis Technicians conferred certificates- 24th March, 2007.
  • ICU on wheels procured with M.P. funds of Shree L.K. Advani- 1st March, 2007.

  • “Bhagwaan Mahaveer Karuna Sewa Sanmaan” given away- 31st March, 2007.
  • Combined successful thymic and kidney transplantation in a 13 years old boy from 52 years old deceased donor performed for the 1st time in history of Transplantation Biology- 23rd May, 2007.
  • Team led by Prof. Veena R. Shah returned from Karolinska Institute after 3 months training- 19th June, 2007.
  • 2nd Gujarat Cadaver Organ Transplantation Meet organized- 28th July, 2007
  • Insulin making stem cells generated without using any xenogeneic material for the first time in history of stem cell research, in our lab and successfully used in clinic-15th August, 2007 and 2nd October, 2007.

  • Felicitation by “Divyabhaasker” newspaper as one of the “100 Most powerful persons of Gujarat” for his development of Nephrology and Transplantation Services in India, 29th April, 2011.
  • Felicitated on “Doctors’ Day”, by Sterling Hospital, and by Government Medical College, Bhavnagar and Sir Takhatsinhji General Hospital, Bhavnagar who jointly organized a Blood Donation Camp in Blood Bank, Sir Takhtasinhji General Hospital for “Rakta-Tula” of Dr. H. L. Trivedi. 1st July, 2011.
  • Prof. Pranjal Modi presented his work on laparoscopic kidney transplantation at the American Transplant Congress (ATC) at Philadelphia, USA held from 30th April and 4th May, 2011. This is the first series of 17 patients in the world showing successful outcome of laparoscopic kidney transplantation. His poster was considered as “Poster of Distinction” in the congress.
  • Prof. Modi was also invited as an operating faculty at Uroworkshop-2011 (International live operative workshop on Female Urology, Laser Prostatectomy, and RIRS) on 16th -17th April 2011 at Pt. B. D. Sharma PGI of Medical Sciences, Rohtak, Haryana where he demonstrated laparoscopic repair for vesicovaginal fistula.
  • Prof. Modi was invited as a visiting professor to mentor the surgeons of the kidney transplantation department in Liverpool, UK in 3rd week of May,’11 when 3 donor nephrectomies were performed. This was for the first time in Europe that pure retroperitoneoscopic living donor nephrectomy was carried out.
  • Mr. Jignesh Dave technician from Transplant Immunology lab has been appointed as Member of the Indian Advisory Board of International Consortium for American Society of Clinical Pathology on 17th June,’11.
  • Dr. Vivek B. Kute, 3rd year resident in Nephrology received a travel grant and scholarship to attend World Congress of Nephrology from 8 to 12th April, 2011 at Vancouver, Canada.
  • Organ Donation Awareness Workshop Organized in Maa Sharda Laxmi Auditorium of the institute jointly by Govt. of India, Govt. of Gujarat and IKDRC-ITS, 10th September, 2011.
  • Dr Pranjal Modi invited to join editorial board of ‘Transplantation’ journal- December 2012.
  • Dr. J. Jayprakash, 2nd Yr. Resident (Anaesthesia) won the T.N.JHA GOLD MEDAL for the best paper at ISACON 2011, MUMBAI.
